Antibiotics might kill E. Coli and…you
In the last number of Scientific American, a short story related to the E. Coli "outbreak" from this spring caught my attention. (By the way, I like the whole magazine, it has good articles, but this small one seems a little more useful to the larger public).
It seems that the strain of E. Coli that became too famous this year is resistant to more than 14 antibiotics and if that's not enough, if you try to treat it with antibiotics some might cause the bacteria to release a dangerous quantity of toxins when it dies, putting your life in danger even more. So the safe thing to do would be to go to a doctor, instead of treating yourself.
I know that in Romania self-applied medicine is a normal custom and there's also a conception that you should treat almost "everything" with antibiotics, to be sure that you're healed. 
Burn less not eat less
This morning I bought the number from July 2011 of the Scientific American magazine. Let's say that is not the cheapest magazine here in Holland, but it seemed to have some cool subjects to "attack" during metro travelling.
One of the articles is about the recent food "crisis" and what are the real causes of it. It seems that it's not because the world population keeps growing and the production falls behind, but because the demand of biofuels has increased a lot.
I must say, if this is true, doesn't look like a very smart way to use resources.

Este unul dintre cele mai mari parcuri naționale private din Olanda și poate fi parcurs cu ajutorul unei biciclete dintre cele 1700 puse la dispoziție gratuit în interiorul parcului. Există 2 trasee pentru biciclete care acoperă mare parte din parc, dar le poți abandona oricând și să "o tai" cu bicicleta printre copaci, pe alei mai puțin umblate.
Bicicletele pot fi găsite de obicei în parcări amenajate special lângă unele puncte din interes din parc. Prin urmare, poți lua una de la intrare și apoi dacă vrei să te oprești să vizitezi un muzeu, sau poate să iei masa la unul din cele 2 restaurante, o poți abandona fără grijă în parcare, pentru că poți lua oricând alta.
Pe lângă plimbarea în natură și posibilitatea de a vedea animale în sălbăticie (există puncte de observație, plasate din loc în loc), poți vizita unul dintre cele 3 muzee din acest parc. Cred că cele mai interesante sunt Muzeul Kröller-Müller (este recunoscut pentru colecția bogată de tablouri Van Gogh și nu numai) și "Muzeul de sub pământ" (este singurul muzeu de acest fel din lume și poți explora cum arată viața sub pământ).
Este un loc incredibil în care te poți relaxa și bucura de natură și vă recomand să-l încercați!
about.me vs flavors.me
I like to think that having a presence online, big or small, it's beneficial for you as an individual or as a professional. These been said, when I bought a new hosting account, I was offered for free a domain. This is how I got alexchiri.com. My next problem was what to do with it. I already had a domain for this blog. And then I remembered about sites like about.me and flavors.me.
The idea with these sites is to easily create an online "business card", a place where someone can go and access all the details about you, that represent the online you.
The only services that I know of that let you quickly setup such a page are about.me and flavors.me. I compared them and in the end I made a choice. Here is a comparison between the two of them and in the end I'll tell you what was my choice:

But even if you don't want a custom domain, flavors.me is much more configurable and the fact they have those predefined layouts, allows you to achieve more without much of a hustle.

Some time ago, I found this website which has really cool and good quality wallpapers:
True customer support
While I was having a beer with my colleagues at one of the few breweries in Amsterdam, it happened to see a very, let's say troubled, guy, who seemed very determined to get somewhere. His walk reminded me of those scenes from the cartoons or old mute movies, where a character gets shot, stabbed etc. and he starts a "death dance", makes a few steps then he feels another shiver of death and so on until he hits the ground. Fortunately, our real character didn't hit the ground, he just froze in front of a car, in the middle of the road, until a concerned citizen suggested him to sustain his misery on a pole on the walk way. He was very cooperating and for a while he just stood there for some minutes, probably trying to figure where the hell he is. And now the good part comes, where someone from the brewery came to him with a big glass of water and hands it to him.
As one of the guys mentioned, if someone didn't take him out of the road, he had two options: prison or death. Fortunately, it seemed that he was some kind of premium client of a brewery that takes care of its customers.
Humanitarian transport Holland – Romanian
În drum spre serviciu, prin zona Amsterdam Arena, mi-a atras atenția trailerul din imagine.
La prima vedere aș crede că sunt ajutoare umanitare trimise din România spre Olanda, deși nu prea cred că e nevoie. Sau să fie trimise din România pentru vreo campanie umanitară inițiată de Olanda?

În contextul în care unii vorbesc despre proiectul Redescoperă România s-ar putea ca datorită articolelor ce vor mai urma pe aici să fiu considerat egoist, infam, trădător de patrie etc. Tot ce e posibil!
Aplicații Android utile în Olanda
Având multe persoane cu Android prin jur, am aflat destul de repede de o serie de aplicații utile pentru cei care trec sau locuiesc prin Olanda. Cu excepția Byki Dutch, toate sunt gratuite.
